President Bola Tinubu recently signed a bill to reinstate Nigeria’s old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was used from 1960 to 1978. This move marks a significant change from the more recent anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” which had been in use since 1978.
The decision to revert to the old anthem was presented during a joint session of the National Assembly to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s 4th Republic. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the passage of the bill, highlighting that the older anthem resonates more deeply with the Nigerian populace due to its historical and emotional significance. Tinubu himself did not give a detailed speech at the session but indicated that more comprehensive remarks and official recitations of the reinstated anthem would occur on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The bill had been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly before reaching the President for his signature.
